Flowers on Sentosa Island

This post features the flowers I saw on my Sentosa Island outing. Though there were not many, my best encounter was with these Octopus Tree flowers that were about a meter above eye level. Considering that these trees were always towering over me at heights of 5 meters - those at the Singapore Botanic Gardens, on Mount Faber and near Sungei Buloh Wetlands Nature Reserve and MacRitchie Reservoir - I was really lucky to come this close to these flowers.

Unknown. These flowers were on the ground and I did not see any plant nearby that had these flowers. Perhaps I did not look above me. I like the tiny flower pattern encased in the pentagon-shaped centre.

Too late to see the flowers. Instead there were small berry-like fruits at the top of this plant that I do not know the name of.

It is back to my Canon IXUS - better that than having none at all. The DSLR was too cumbersome and I only wanted to concentrate on my walk.

Rhodomyrtus tomentosa (Rose Myrtle). Origin: China to India & S.E.Asia.

Calathea lutea. Origin: Tropical America.

Alocasia macrorrhizos 'Metallica'. Origin: East Indies.


Unknown to me. A ball of tiny flowers.

Flowers seen on Good Friday

Good Friday is a laid-back day for me. I went to the wet market not to do marketing but just to walk around and see what other people were up to. We witnessed a quarrel in the carpark between two strangers over scarce parking space that provided some dramatic entertainment for idle bystanders. As tomorrow is the 15th day of the lunar month, many stalls were selling chrysanthemum flowers of different varienties and colours that Buddhist housewives buy to place on their altars at home.Amongst the bucketfuls of flowers I spotted this unusual flower placed at the side of the stall unnoticed by people seeking out only the familiar and that's when my unobtrusive Canon IXUS comes in handy. What flower could this be? Is it a relative of the Chrysanthemum?
